A split sheet is a written agreement that documents each contributor's ownership percentage in a song. It should be signed before or immediately after a recording session. It's one of the most important documents in the music business — without it, disputes over ownership can hold up releases and royalty payments for years.
There's no universal rule, but common splits are: songwriter gets 50% and producer gets 50%, or if there are multiple writers, the production share might be 15-25% with the rest divided among writers. The key is agreeing before the song is finished.
It depends on the agreement. Some featured artists negotiate a percentage of the song (typically 10-25%), while others take a flat fee or a share of the master recording only (not the publishing). Always get this in writing before the feature is recorded.
Splits must always total exactly 100%. If they don't, distributors and PROs may reject your registration, or royalties could be held in escrow until the discrepancy is resolved. This calculator validates that your splits total 100% before generating the split sheet.
