You need to record your screen for a tutorial, bug report, or presentation. You don't want to install OBS (too complex) or pay for Loom ($15/month). Here's the free way.
Record Your Screen in 3 Clicks
- Open the Screen Recorder
- Choose what to share: entire screen, a specific window, or a browser tab
- Click Record. Click Stop when done. Download your recording.
Adding Audio
You can record with microphone audio (your voice), system audio (what's playing on your computer), or both. For tutorials, you almost always want microphone audio so you can narrate what you're doing.
Tips for Better Screen Recordings
Clean your desktop first. Close unnecessary tabs and notifications. Nobody needs to see your 47 open Chrome tabs.
Increase your cursor size. Default cursor is tiny on a high-res screen. Make it bigger so viewers can follow your mouse.
Talk as you click. Say what you're about to do before you do it. "Now I'm going to click Settings" gives the viewer time to follow along.
Keep it short. Under 5 minutes for a how-to. Under 2 minutes for a bug report. Respect people's time.
Best Formats for Screen Recordings
The recorder outputs WebM, which plays in all modern browsers. If you need MP4 for uploading to YouTube or sharing with someone on Windows, you can convert it with the Video Compressor (which also reduces file size).
