A URL slug is the part of a URL that identifies a specific page in a human-readable way. For example, in '/blog/my-awesome-post', 'my-awesome-post' is the slug.
Always use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but underscores as word joiners. So 'best-pizza' is read as two words (best, pizza), while 'best_pizza' is treated as a single token. Hyphens are the universal standard for SEO-friendly URLs.
Keep slugs under 60 characters. Include your target keyword but remove stop words like 'the', 'a', 'an', 'in', and 'of'. Shorter slugs rank better in search engines, are easier to share and remember, and look cleaner in analytics reports.
Only if the content is genuinely time-sensitive, like 'tax-brackets-2026' or 'best-phones-2026'. For evergreen content, omit the year so the URL stays relevant when you update the article. Changing slugs later means setting up redirects, which is avoidable with good planning.
