Wallpaper has made a major comeback in interior design, and getting the quantity right is essential. Ordering too little means a delay while waiting for more rolls (and risking dye lot differences). Ordering too much wastes money. Our wallpaper calculator handles the math, including the tricky pattern-repeat waste that most people underestimate.
Measure each wall length and add them together for the perimeter. Measure ceiling height from the floor to where the wallpaper will end (usually the ceiling or a chair rail). For rooms with angled ceilings or soffits, measure to the tallest point and accept that some waste is unavoidable.
US wallpaper rolls are typically 27 inches wide and 33 feet long per single roll. European rolls are often 20.5 inches wide with the same 33-foot length. Some commercial papers come in 36-inch or 54-inch widths. Always note whether pricing is per single roll or double roll, as the industry convention can be confusing.
The pattern repeat measurement is found on the wallpaper label. A wallpaper with no repeat (solid color, random texture) wastes very little material. A 12-inch repeat can waste up to 12 inches per strip as you align the pattern. A 24-inch repeat can waste nearly two feet per strip. Larger patterns look dramatic but cost more in material waste.
Vinyl wallpaper is the most durable and washable, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Non-woven wallpaper is easy to install and remove, making it great for renters and first-timers. Peel-and-stick wallpaper requires no paste and is removable. Traditional paper wallpaper offers the widest design selection but requires more skill to install.
Start with a plumb line (vertical reference) near a corner. Work away from the main focal point so any pattern mismatch ends in the least visible spot. Use a sharp blade for every cut -- dull blades tear wet paper. Smooth out bubbles with a wallpaper smoother working from center to edges. Wipe excess paste immediately with a damp sponge.

Wallpaper is priced per single roll but sold in double rolls (sometimes called bolts). A standard US single roll is 27 inches wide x 33 feet long (~57 sq ft). A double roll is twice that length at 66 feet. Always check whether prices are per single or double roll.
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance between where the pattern starts and where it repeats. A 12-inch repeat means every 12 inches the pattern cycles. Larger repeats create more waste because each strip must be aligned. No-repeat patterns (solids, textures, random patterns) are the most material-efficient.
Measure the full wall including doors and windows, then subtract their areas. Standard doors are approximately 21 sq ft (3x7 ft) and windows about 15 sq ft (3x5 ft). You still need some wallpaper around these openings, so we only subtract partial strip counts.
One gallon of pre-mixed wallpaper paste covers approximately 4-5 single rolls. Peel-and-stick wallpaper requires no paste. For paste-the-wall products, you apply paste to the wall rather than the paper, which is easier for beginners.
It is possible but not recommended. Old wallpaper can bubble, peel, or show texture through the new layer. Best practice is to remove old wallpaper with a steamer or scoring tool and stripping solution, repair the wall surface, then apply new wallpaper to a clean, smooth surface.
