Standard overtime is time worked over 40 hours per week, paid at 1.5x your regular rate (time and a half). Some states like California also require daily overtime for hours worked beyond 8 in a single day. Double time (2x) may apply after 12 hours in a day or on the 7th consecutive workday.
Subtract your clock-in time from your clock-out time for each day, then subtract any unpaid breaks (typically 30-60 minutes for lunch). Add up the daily totals for your weekly hours. Our time card calculator handles this automatically, including rounding to common intervals (6, 15, or 30 minutes).
Time clock rounding adjusts clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest increment. Common rounding intervals are 6 minutes (1/10th of an hour), 15 minutes (quarter hour), and 30 minutes (half hour). The DOL allows rounding as long as it averages out fairly over time and doesn't consistently favor the employer.
Under federal law (FLSA), meal breaks of 30 minutes or more are typically unpaid as long as the employee is completely relieved of duties. Short breaks of 5-20 minutes are generally considered paid work time. State laws may have additional requirements.
Multiply your regular hours (up to 40) by your hourly rate. Then multiply any overtime hours (over 40) by 1.5x your rate. Add them together for gross pay. Example: 45 hours at $20/hr = (40 x $20) + (5 x $30) = $800 + $150 = $950 gross pay.
