The US Navy method uses circumference measurements (waist, neck, and hip for women) along with height to estimate body fat percentage. It was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center and is the standard for US military fitness assessments.
The Navy method has a standard error of approximately 3-4% compared to DEXA scans. It tends to be more accurate for people with average body types and less accurate for very muscular or very lean individuals. It is considered more reliable than BMI for estimating body composition.
For men: Essential fat 2-5%, Athletes 6-13%, Fitness 14-17%, Average 18-24%, Obese 25%+. For women: Essential fat 10-13%, Athletes 14-20%, Fitness 21-24%, Average 25-31%, Obese 32%+.
Measure your waist at the navel (belly button) level. Stand relaxed, do not suck in your stomach. Wrap the tape horizontally around your waist. For neck, measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). For hips (women only), measure at the widest point of the buttocks.
