You can only get pregnant during a roughly 6-day window each cycle. Knowing when that window opens is the single most important factor in getting pregnant faster. Here's how to figure it out.
How to Calculate Your Ovulation Date
Ovulation typically happens 14 days before your next period starts. So if your cycle is 28 days long, you probably ovulate around day 14. If your cycle is 32 days, ovulation is around day 18.
The Ovulation Calculator does this math for you and shows your fertile window for the next 3 months.
Your Fertile Window
Sperm can survive inside the body for up to 5 days. The egg survives about 12-24 hours after ovulation. So your fertile window is roughly 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after.
The two days right before ovulation have the highest pregnancy rates. If you only track one thing, track those two days.
Signs of Ovulation
Your body gives signals when ovulation is approaching:
- Cervical mucus changes: Gets clear, stretchy, and slippery (like egg whites)
- Basal body temperature: Rises slightly (0.4-1.0 degrees F) right after ovulation
- Ovulation test strips: Detect the LH surge that happens 24-36 hours before ovulation
- Mild cramping: Some women feel a twinge on one side (called mittelschmerz)
When to See a Doctor
If you've been tracking ovulation and timing things right for 12 months without success (or 6 months if you're over 35), talk to your doctor. About 1 in 8 couples has difficulty conceiving, and there are effective treatments available.
A Note on Accuracy
Calculator estimates are based on averages. Your actual ovulation day can vary by a few days each cycle. For the most precise tracking, combine the calculator with ovulation test strips. The calculator tells you when to START testing, and the strips confirm the exact day.
